My personal data gathered through Facebook’s invisible form of surveillance (Off-Facebook Activity Tool) and translate it into visible forms of Data Visualizations by creating an interactive web-experience showcasing the same.

Taking inspiration from the Panopticon, an 18th-century architectural design by Jeremy Bentham, wherein the principle is central inspection. The parallels between the panopticon and CCTV may be obvious, but what happens when you step into the world of digital surveillance and data capture? Are we still “objects of information” as we swipe between cells on our smartphone screens?

+ Internet Surveillance Camera

Facebook offers an advertising tool called Facebook Pixel, which is installed on millions of websites to collect and transmit data back to Facebook. It tracks various details about a user, such as the time spent on a website, the pages viewed, and whether items were added to the shopping cart. By analyzing this data, Facebook gains insights into users' preferences, interests, and online behavior, enabling them to serve personalized advertisements.

+ Off-Facebook Activity

When I saw the extent of the data Facebook had on me, it was a real eye-opener. I no longer questioned the "how" because I understood that various organizations and businesses share this information through Facebook Business Tools. Instead, I found myself questioning the "why."

+ Facebook App Event Tracking

Facebook offers several business tools that organizations and companies can use to collect data. One of these tools is Facebook App Event Tracking, which allows businesses to monitor user actions within their mobile app or website, such as app installs and purchase events. By tracking these events, businesses can analyze data, evaluate ad performance, and create targeted audiences for advertising.
